No matter how old you are, health experts say, when it comes to COVID-19, no one is immune. “We’ve seen newborns who are COVID positive all the way through children who are in their late teens,” said Armando Llechu CAO Golisano Children’s Hospital.

To date, Golisano Children’s Hospital has diagnosed several hundred patients with COVID-19. “We’ve seen some of the MISC cases with the multisystem inflammatory secondary to COVID and those patients we have also been able to treat and discharge,” he said.

While children’s symptoms appear to be less severe than adult symptoms, health experts say if parents are concerned it’s important to seek care. “The vast majority of patients that have tested positive with COVID have gone home from the ER or the urgent care centers. The only ones that have been admitted are the ones whose symptoms or comorbidities, who have other conditions that really warrant them being in the hospital,” said Llechu.

If a child needs to be tested for COVID-19, the nasal swab test is the same for children and adults. “We just don’t know what the long term effects are going to be of having COVID. Your body’s immune response to COVID,” he said.

Which is why health experts encourage children two and older to wear a mask when out in public, practice good hand hygiene, and keep six feet apart from others.
